Wildflowers and Plants of Central Mexico

There is an amazing variety of habitats in Central Mexico. The rainy season in Central Mexico begins in May and ends in September-October and the peak season for many of the wildflowers is in late summer-early fall. In September of 2006, 2007,2008, 2009 and 2010 Ron and his co-author, Mary Gerritsen, have traveled to Mexico and set out on multi-day (from 4 to 16 day) botanical expeditions with their friend and colleague Aarón Rodriguez (IBUG, University of Guadalajara).

The variety of plants photographed was truly amazing…dahlias, cosmos, marigolds, zinnias, ipomaea, terrestrial orchids, gesneriads, cacti and succulents, palms, and of course, many bulb species including the mexican Calochortus. The first year we visited various sites in Jalisco. The second year, on a 16 day trip we visited (in order) the states of Jalisco, Michoacan, Mexico, Morelos, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tlazcala, Hidalgo, Queretero, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato and Jalisco. Our third trip, in September of 2008, was a little shorter, at 8 days, but we still managed to travel over 2000 miles,  heading north  from Guadalajara, traveling through the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas, Durango, Coahuila, and then heading south through Nuevo Leon, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosi, Queretaro and Guanajuato. In 2009, we stayed in the state of Jalisco, revisiting some sites from our first visit and exploring some new ones. In 2010, we traveled through the states of Zacatecas, Durango and Chihuahua. We have nearly completed our quest to find and photograph all of the known Mexican Calochortus species. This talk highlights some of the impressive plants and flowers that we found on these trips.
